The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children be evaluated by an orthodontic specialist at age 7 and our doctors are familiar with the differing needs of patients from early elementary school to adults in the late golden years. Our thorough evaluation goes beyond the teeth to consider the long-term effects of orthodontic treatment on the balance of the face, breathing/snoring, jaw joint, bite function and the aging process. If orthodontic intervention is indicated, our entire team will make sure that you receive the highest level of personalized care with customized treatment techniques for a beautiful smile in the shortest time possible.

If you or your child has noticed or been told by the dentist that orthodontics may be needed, we would like to meet you! Come visit us for a complimentary consultation to see how our approach is unique and see the difference a beautiful, healthy smile can make.

What Happens At The First Visit?

The doctors will perform a comprehensive exam. The resulting preliminary diagnosis and treatment plan will provide answers to the following questions:

  • Is orthodontic treatment indicated?
  • What treatment options are available?
  • Is this the appropriate time for treatment?
  • What are the steps to begin treatment?
  • How long will it take and what is the frequency of visits?
  • What are the costs and payment plans?

Orthodontic Consultation

There are often many different ways to orthodontically treat the same patient, some of which may prove to be a better fit for you/your child. Orthodontic tooth movement often has influences far beyond the teeth such as a long lasting effect on the face, the gum tissue, the appearance of the smile and even how old someone looks!

We offer new patient exam appointments outside of the regular clinic hours. This ensures that the doctors can spend the time needed to give you an understanding of your orthodontic needs to help you decide on the best course of action for you or your child.

The Doctors have extensive experience with a wide variety of orthodontic scenarios. A treatment plan outline and exact fee can usually be generated at the time of the initial consultation for patients who are ready to start treatment. The doctors then review all the records thoroughly and if there is an unexpected finding or complexity, they contact the patient/family to discuss this.

For patients that require a multidisciplinary cases involving communication with other doctors, a follow-up appointment is set for the patient/family to meet with the doctors to review the records together and discuss the treatment options. It is also possible to have this appointment set up remotely by phone/internet if more convenient.

Sometimes, the first appointment or two will be focused on verbal coaching for a patient who may be apprehensive or who has a habit which may be treatable at home. For younger patients who exhibit persistent thumb or finger sucking, Dr. Gorton has written an article for the “Marin Mommies” group that provides helpful tips for transitioning away from the habit.

It’s Good To Talk

Treatment plan discussion is not limited to the beginning of treatment. The doctors are available to answer any questions at any time throughout the course of treatment.
